Objective
To establish a marketplace that facilitates the practice of barter, enabling individuals to experience the fluidity of item ownership, while also instilling the concept of sustainability by valuing items that can be exchanged again.
Background
The proposed barter project aims to address the pressing issue of resource waste and promote sustainability. By providing a platform for individuals to exchange their unwanted physical items and services, we aim to foster a culture of reuse and reduce waste generation. Our ultimate goal is to catalyze the transformation towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly society, where resources are utilized efficiently, and the detrimental impact of excessive consumption and landfill waste is minimized.
Our Specialty
Our project stands out from others addressing resource waste and sustainability through two key differentiators: a coupon-based trading system and the inclusion of services. By implementing these unique aspects, we revolutionize the way individuals engage with the social issue at hand.
Firstly, our coupon-based trading system adds value and choice for participants. Instead of simply donating, recycling, or discarding unwanted items, students can exchange them for coupons. Each item donated corresponds to a specific number of coupons, which can then be used to acquire something desired from the market. This approach allows them to trade their unwanted items for something they desire.
Secondly, our project goes beyond the exchange of physical items alone. In addition to physical items (e.g., clothes, furniture), we embrace the inclusion of services (e.g., language exchange). By facilitating the exchange of skills, time, and expertise, we create an inclusive platform that expands opportunities for collaboration and mutual support. This inclusive exchange model enriches the barter experience and strengthens community bonds.
Targets
Individuals: Participants will benefit by being able to trade their unwanted items for something they need or desire, eliminating the need to purchase new items and saving money. They can also access services or expertise they may require without financial transactions, enhancing their quality of life.
Environment: The project contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing resource consumption and waste generation. By encouraging the reuse and exchange of items, it helps to minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills and reduces the need for the production of new goods.
Community: The project fosters a sense of Wu Yee Sun College or CUHK community connection and engagement. It provides a platform for people to interact, share resources, and build relationships, eventually, strengthening the bonds within the community.
