In order to collect the unwanted materials from societies and donate to the organizations more effectively, we would like to set up a team on campus. We can therefore help reduce the waste and giveaway the items to the needy.
There are different student associations or societies in the universities and many of them will give different souveniers and T-shirts in orientation activities to welcome the new members. According to Sing Tao Daily, total 12 million tonnes of waste is produced after the orientation camps every year. Some unused materials may be still idling in the store room.
Although there are green groups to help collect the waste, most of them are only willing to collect some kind of materials like promotional papers or plastic water bottles. In fact, there are many kinds of souveniers and sponsored items like the shampoo and toothpaste. Furthermore, many students tend to put the materials made of paper, alumium and plastic in the recycled bins or bins on campus instead of contacting the green groups. However, many items are new and functional, it will benefit the needy if we can donate the supplies to them.
Furthermore, our distribution channels of collected materials will be broadening by collaborating with rotaract societies in CUHK. Every year they organize several service trips and setting booth to collect materials on campus. You can see from the photo that we used the LED flashing rings which was one of the unwanted materials after the orientation camps to make the laterns with the kids in the service trip in Indonesia.
Hence, our distribution channels of collected materials will be broadening by collaborating with rotaract societies in CUHK. Every year they organize several service trips and setting booth to collect materials in campus. We can build up a bridge with them to give the useful materials to them.
If the project is implemented, it wil benefit different stakeholders. Students can handle the waste and clean the store room more meaningfully and more conveniently. More materials can be recycled and donate to different organizations. It helps green group to reduce the workload. Furthermore, it benefits our society as less waste is incinerated and the needy can get want they want in a new mean.
