Re-Value

Description:
Why? To reduce the solid waste and reverse the wasteful lifestyle inside hostel
How? To invent a mobile application named "Re-Value" to facilitate residential students to exchange redundant materials
What? To allow students to give and take the redundant materials in the collection area inside hostel

Observation
Solid waste problem is prevailing in Hong Kong, mainly attributed to city’s affluence and consumerism culture. Cursed by materialistic gratification, we purchase impulsively without assessing our needs. The value of good drops drastically after purchase and we throw the useless away out of convenience.

In fact, we are throwing away things that still have value, not to us, but perhaps others. Such feeling of pity comes from our observation in hostel’s pantry. A brand new bread expiring in 2 days is being silently shared. The original owner may not want to consume it and so place it there for someone to pick up. But no one knows! It ends up in the saturating landfill. NOT ONLY bread, it can be everything! As long as they lose value to us, we throw away. But it may be valuable to others. To reverse such wasteful story, we propose “Re-Value”.

Objectives
1.           Reduce solid waste and reserve wasteful living within hostel
2.           Advocate a sharing lifestyle to bridge the gap among hostel residents
3.           Raise fund via free pricing to pass on love and care

Idea: Re-Value
Our project targets on two groups of people in WYS college: givers and takers, consisting of two parts: online platform and collections area.
Givers
They are those who have something to offer for free.
Takers
They are those who find the collections valuable to them.
Online platform: App/ Website
It will be developed in forms like mobile app or website for quickly spreading out collections’ information.
Collection area: Lobby/ Each floor, next to lift
It is a place collecting things offered by givers and allowing takers to take away things valuable to them. A cabinet is set up for collections and a fundraising box is placed next to it.
Give & Take Process
When givers have something to offer, they place it in the collection area and open a post on online platform displaying information of the offered good. Takers can read posts from online platform to look for collections. When they find something valuable to them, they can take it from collection area and put down its worth into fundraising box. Proceeds collected be entirely donated to charities on behalf WYS college.
