C!ab hosted an voluntary work that allow participant to have a deeper insight into the food insecurity in our community despite that fact that Hong Kong is an affluent city where imports over 95% of its food, but it discards approximately 3,200 tonnes of food daily while 20% of the population still faces food shortages and lives in poverty at the same time. Therefore, voluntary food rescue initiative is launched with a goal to reduce food waste by joining the breadline.
In our voluntary work, we utilized the first public digital platform dedicated to food rescue created by breadline. In the platform, bakeries with surplus bread are shown on the map with the amount of bread remaining, allowing us to freely register and go to the bakeries to collect the bread that fit our schedule and routes. This time, we went to 6 bakeries and convenient stores near the Hong Kong university to collect more than 100 breads and dropped off the bread at Sheung Wan.
This voluntary work is highly enriching and unforgettable experience for all participants. Participants are able to contribute their efforts to redistribute surplus food and donate to communities in need instead of being thrown away, edible unsold food is collected at the end of the day. More importantly, participants are able to explored such online platform for doing voluntary work that provide a highly flexible schedule for being volunteers, which is very convenient especially for university students.
